Disabled people, especially women, experience higher rates of domestic abuse and often face unique vulnerabilities, such as:

  • Physical dependence on the abuser for mobility or personal care
  • Abuse that weaponises disability (e.g., withholding medication, equipment, or interpreting services)
  • Inaccessible services or transportation barriers
  • Stereotypes that prevent them from being believed

According to the Office for National Statistics (2020), 1 in 2 disabled women have experienced abuse – compared to 1 in 4 non-disabled women.
