Domestic abuse is rooted in power and control. Survivors may stay in abusive relationships for many reasons:

  • Fear of violence or escalation
  • Love, hope for change, or emotional attachment
  • Worry about children or losing custody
  • Financial dependence or housing insecurity
  • Isolation or lack of support
  • Threats to pets, self-harm or suicide by the abuser
  • Cultural, religious or social pressures

Abuse often follows a cycle: tension builds, violence or control is used, followed by an apparent “honeymoon phase” of remorse. This cycle can be very difficult to break without support.

Abuse happens because of the choices made by the abuser – not because of anything you have done.

Thinking about your next steps

You don’t have to make any big decisions straight away. If you’re thinking about leaving, or just starting to question your situation, there are small steps you can take to feel safer and more informed. This might include speaking to someone you trust, learning about your options, or creating a safety plan. Support is available to help you move at your own pace, when you feel ready.

If you think you are experiencing domestic abuse, contact us for support and talk to a domestic abuse advisor at TDAS.
