Trafford Domestic Abuse Services was founded in 1990 by a group of local women determined to create safe, specialist support for those experiencing domestic abuse. What began as a grassroots response to a clear community need has grown into a trusted, established service.

Over the years, we have expanded and adapted to reflect a deeper understanding of abuse in all its forms, developing a wide range of support including safe accommodation, community based services, and programmes for adults, children and young people.

Today, we continue to build on these strong foundations, working in partnership and putting survivors at the heart of everything we do to create safer futures.

Everyone Deserves to Live Free from Abuse

At TDAS, we believe that everyone deserves to live free from fear, control, and abuse. Domestic abuse is a crime and is never acceptable—no matter who it affects. Our vision is for a community where all people can live safe, empowered lives without threat or harm. Yet we know that too many people remain trapped in abusive relationships with partners, children, or other family members.

We are here to support all survivors, regardless of sex, gender identity, or personal circumstances. If you need adjustments to access our services, we will do everything we can to meet your needs and ensure you feel safe and supported.

Our accommodation, group and therapeutic work is delivered in single sex spaces, recognising the safety, comfort, and healing that single-sex environments can provide. However, this will never be a barrier to accessing support. If this setting doesn’t meet your needs, we will work with you to find a safe and appropriate alternative.

Our story

TDAS began in 1990, when a group of local Trafford women recognised the urgent need for safe accommodation for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

They took action – fundraising, campaigning, and advocating for change – determined to provide sanctuary and safety for survivors. Their efforts led to the founding of Phoenix House, Trafford’s first women-only family refuge. It was a place where survivors could find shelter, dignity and hope.

Since then, TDAS has grown from one refuge to a leading domestic abuse service supporting adults, children, and professionals across Greater Manchester. While our services have evolved, our purpose remains the same: to break the cycle of abuse and build a safer future for all.

Recognising Inequality, Supporting Every Survivor

We recognise that access to support is not equal. It is shaped by identity, social power, and protected characteristics. Domestic abuse is rooted in gender inequality – women’s experiences of abuse are both a cause and a consequence of the wider systems of disadvantage they face. For men, social expectations around masculinity can make it difficult to ask for help. Trans and non-binary survivors are often navigating an increasingly hostile environment, and may worry they won’t be believed or understood.

At TDAS, we see you. We will listen without judgement, and we will always treat you with dignity, respect and care.
